P5 Take Flight: Exploring Gravity for British Science Week

12th Mar 2026
P5 celebrated British Science Week with an exciting, hands-on investigation into gravity and how mass can affect the speed of a falling object. This linked perfectly with our World Around Us topic on Space. To test their ideas, the children created paper helicopters and then got creative—adding extra propellers, pens, rubbers, cellotape and clips—to see if they could make their designs reach the ground more quickly. The challenge had one important rule:
Every helicopter had to spin before landing! After a fun and highly competitive elimination round, we were left with two finalists. The winning design?
A helicopter with a rubber attached — proving just how much mass can influence gravity’s pull! It was a fantastic investigation that encouraged prediction, creativity, teamwork, and scientific thinking. What a brilliant way to explore the forces that shape our universe!
